River Groups Help

1) If you have lost your River Group login details, please contact Helen to have it resent to you.

-----------------------------------------------

2) Overall tips when adding content to the site:

a) Do not paste in text that you have copied from Word or other word processing software, as this will carry with it hidden bits of code that will make the text on the website look strange/messy. Ideally type in a text editor, such as Notepad which can be found under Accessories on all PCs, so you have a copy on your computer before pasting it into the site.

b) Save what you've typed on each page before leaving the computer inactive for a long time. Otherwise you might lose your work.

c) Ideally upload a square image for news and events items as this will display best on the site. Ensure your images aren't too large. If you have taken them on a digital camera, use any software that came with your camera to reduce the size of them to around 50 - 100kb.

d) When writing news or events pieces, if you want to make use of the formatting options on the main text box area such as bold and italic, then please go ahead. But if you don't know what the icons mean, don't worry - it won't effect your piece going live or being read by visitors to the site.

e) If you wish to add a link from your text to another website, or another page of this website, please select the text with your mouse (click and drag your mouse over the text so it goes blue) and then click on the icon that looks like a chain link from the bold, italic, etc formatting bar.

In the box that appears (image above), fill in the following fields:

Link URL: This is where you are linking to. Be sure to put the full URL - eg. http://www.bristol.gov.uk. A full URL will always start with http:// - the best way to be sure of getting the full URL is to visit the website or web page you wish to link to, and copy what is in the address bar on your browser. See the image below for an example (the address bar has a red box around it).

Address bar

Anchors: You don't need this.

Target: Use this to select whether you want the website you're linking to to open in a new browser window or not.

Title: Give your link a title - eg. Link to Bristol Council's website.

Class: You don't need this.

Ignore all the other tabs/forms.

Then click "Insert".

3) Once you have logged in you, you will see an extra menu bar along the top of the screen. You are now able to:

a) Update your Group details.

You can do this by clicking on "Groups" from the main menu, or "River Groups" from the black admin menu along the top of the screen. Find your group, and you will see that you have links to "edit" or "delete" your details. NOTE: clicking delete will permanently remove all mention of your river group from this website!

b) Add news to the site.

If you river group has some news to announce, you can add it here. Simply go to "News System" in the top admin tool bar, and select "Add News Item" from the drop down menu. Simply type in your news title and story, and if you wish to add an image, use the "Change Image" link. A box will appear, so you can click on "browse" and find the picture on your computer, in the same way you would send an attachment on an email. If you don't have an image, don't worry - a place holder will show instead.

c) Add an event to the calendar.

If your river group is organising an event, you can add details of it here. Click on "Events Calendar" from the top admin menu, and select "Add event" from the drop down menu. Fill in the form there with as much detail as you have about your event. When you click on the date boxes, a calendar will appear. Select the start and end dates of your event using the calendar.

d) Add resources to the rivers. For instructions on how to do this, please read the Adding River Resources Guide.
